Antique Silver

Collecting antique silver is for me one of the most fascinating areas of antiques collecting that you could wish to be involved in.

With antique pottery, porcelain, glass, and other forms of antique you often find that peices are unmarked, and although it is possible to make an educated guess of the maker and the date that an object was produced, it is never possible to be 100% sure.

With antique silver, and thanks to the system of hallmarking, it is always possible to tell exactly when, where, and by whom an item was made, which means that you can say with certainty what teh object that you hold in your hand really is.

This means that you can decide to collect antique silver items by type, eg, antique silver spoons, snuff boxes, etc, or you can also decide to collect by the place that an item was made, for example, antique Irish silver, antique Scottish silver, etc, or even by maker - perhaps you want to build a collection of Hester Bateman silver, or Paul Storr, etc.

This for me opens antique silver collecting out into a whole new dimension where the possibilities are unrestricted.
